Is Your Heat Pump Not Cooling Properly? Time for Heat Pump Repair!

You need reliable air conditioning in your home during the Christchurch summer months. A quality heat pump installed by experts can keep things comfortable and cozy.

When a heat pump breaks there are a number of possible underlying causes. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Wrong thermostat setting.
  • Low Refrigerant levels.
  • Dirty or blocked outdoor unit.
  • Leaks or holes in the ductwork.

Let’s go into more detail about each of these issues and their fixes.

  • Wrong Thermostat Setting

If your heat pump isn’t cooling your home properly, first check that the thermostat is set to AUTO and COOL.

Checking for the COOL setting is obvious. But why would you need to set the thermostat to AUTO rather than ON? When your thermostat is set to ON, it will continually blow air into your home, whether that air has been cooled or not. When your thermostat is set to AUTO, it will blow only cool air into your home.

So, if you notice that the air coming from your AC vents isn’t always cold or your space isn’t cooling down, start by checking your thermostat settings.

  • Low Refrigerant Levels

Your air conditioner cools your home by drawing out the warm air, carrying it outside via refrigerant lines. However, when refrigerant levels are low, your AC system won’t be able to carry as much heat out of your home. The system will struggle to cool your space.
When refrigerant levels are low, you will need a professional to repair the refrigerant lines and refill the refrigerant.

  • Blocked Outdoor Unit

When the outdoor unit is dirty or blocked, your air conditioning system will struggle to release heat from the refrigerant to the outdoor air. This causes warmer than desired temperatures. In this case, we recommend hiring a professional to deep clean the outdoor unit.

  • Leaks in the Ductwork

If there are holes or leaks in your ductwork, we advise hiring a professional to assess the situation and repair or replace any damaged ductwork. This isn’t a fix you should attempt to complete on your own, as you could further damage your ductwork.
